Evaluation of heavy metals pollution quest of idol immersion in the river Tapti through environmetrics

ABSTRACT

The present research was carried out to assess heavy metal pollution of the Tapti River in Surat, Gujarat, India after Ganesh idol immersion and use the applications of environmetrics identify the sources of heavy metals along the river. Six locations were selected along the route of the river covering its sites for immersion. The immersion of the idol of Lord Ganesh, Goddess Durga, and Goddess Dashama is a source of heavy metal contamination in Tapti River. The idol is being made  up  of  clay,  Plaster  of  Paris (POP),  cloth,  paper, wood,  jute, adhesive  materials  and  synthetic  paints, etc. Out of all the material used  in  making  the  idol,  paints  contain  heavy  metals  such  as Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Nickel (Ni), Zinc (Zn), Cobalt (Co), Iron (Fe), Cupper (Cu) and Aluminum (Al). The results of high heavy metal concentration after immersion may magnify in their concentrations at different tropic levels of the food chain. Factor analysis and Cluster Analysis in combination with metal concentrations and correlation analysis proved to be an effective tool for source identification and characterization. On the basis of these changes it is concluded that the level of heavy metal pollution increases in Tapti River  due  to  these  religious  activities  and cause  adverse effects  to  the  aquatic  life  or  the entire aquatic ecosystem.
