Antimicrobial activity of some medicinal plants

In-vitro antibacterial activity and preliminary phytochemical study of three plants i.e. Tridax procumbens L, Phyllanthus niruri and Tagetus erecta L were investigated. The petroleum ether, methanol, ethanol and aqueous extracts of all three plants were tested against nine bacterial and two fungal strains. The results of antibacterial activity showed that petroleum ether extracts of all three plants was ineffective. Aqueous extract of T.procumbens, methanol extract of P.niruri and ethanol, methanol and aqueous extract of T.erecta showed good antibacterial activity. The phytochemical analysis showed presence of Tannins by T.procumbens and P.niruri, anthraquinones by P.niruri and T.erecta and flavonoids by T.procumbens and P.niruri.
