Assessment of groundwater quality in contiguous of integrated industrial estate – Pantnagar, Uttarakhand

Groundwater samples were collected from surrounding of Integrated Industrial Estate (IIE) Pantnagar, Uttarakhand during three different seasons summer, monsoon and winter in year 2011-2012.  Ground water samples were tested for 11 physico-chemical parameters at 10 different locations following the standard methods and procedures. Indian standard (IS:10500) for drinking water were adopted for assessment of groundwater quality through calculation of Water Quality Index (WQI). A comparison of observed and estimated values was done based upon calculated water quality indices. The results indicate that calcium, magnesium, sulphate, fluoride and iron exceeded more in groundwater as compared to Indian drinking water standards in the winter season. The overall Water Quality Index value for winter season indicates poor water quality. The overall Water Quality Index value in the summer season indicates good quality of water for drinking purpose. The overall WQI value for monsoon season indicates slightly poor water quality. The result of analysis reveals that the ground water of the contiguous area becomes contaminated due to anthropogenic activities. Therefore, this ground water needs proper treatment before its uses for drinking and domestic purposes.
